The wilderness is no place for soft pulpy people...

The quote in the title (or something close to it) is attributed to John Muir the legendary outdoorsman and conservationist. The same rule applies when selecting wood for friction firelighting. If your wood is too soft then it will dissintegrate before you produce an ember. One of the pieces of wood in the picture will make a decent hearth and drill and the other wont, which one is which?
